Network Summer Schools are, together with other activities - like the Emerging Researchers' Conference with its conference support and the Best Paper Award - part of EERA's ongoing commitment for capacity building. In addition to the Network Summer Schools, which are usually smaller events, EERA Council has initiated a more generic Summer School focusing on basic academic skills.

For more information on the two types of Summer Schools please see the mission statement.

Capacity Building as Focus

Network Summer Schools are courses specifically designed for capacity building and targeting at PhD Students and Emerging Researchers (Post – Doc). Normally an application should cover courses for two successive years. Besides EERA, the applying network needs to have a second partner who is willing to financially support the Summer School.
Applications can only be put forward after a formal Call by EERA Council. The next Call will be issued in 2012. Networks can then apply for courses in 2013/2014.

Principles for Network Summer Schools

  1. An annual event (time of the year to be decided in collaboration between partners)
  2. Duration 1-3 days
  3. Number of attendees 20-30 participants (15 minimum) – including both doctoral students and early career researchers
  4. Event to be held in English
  5. Themes to focus on area/issues directed by the partners
  6. The Summer School would be established in partnership with EERA-Network, an Association or one or more universities normally for two years
  7. Partnerships will be recruited accordingly by an open procedure in EERA Council and on the initiative of the Networks
  8. Responsibility for funding to be shared equally by EERA and partners (total maximum EERA budget in 2010 and 2011 is € 5.000 pr. annum)
  9. The budget can provide for: student accommodation and food, mentor/supervisor/guest tutors: travel, accommodation and food
  10. There is normally no participation fee and no honorarium
  11. Administration is shared by the partners on the basis of a contract
  12. Target Group will normally be early career researchers and PhD students studying in an EERA member country
  13. Tutors and participants will normally be chosen from diverse European countries (Countries with an EERA member association)
